REVELATION: The APOCALYPSE
Chapter 17:7-18 Beast who died, then lived

Teachings by Eileen Smith

Verse 7
False religion is a mystery. How a body of people can claim to
believe and follow God and yet honor and put leaders, governments,
states, doctrines, and rituals above God is a mystery. It is
hypocrisy. How a body of people can claim to believe and follow
God and yet slaughter millions of people because the people do not
believe as they do is a mystery. This was just what John had
witnessed. He saw what the false religion would be like in the
last days of world history. He saw among those killed were a great
multitude of genuine believers. This left John in a state of
amazement and bewilderment wondering how such a thing could ever
take place. The angel steps forward and tells John the he would
now revel the mystery and details of the woman and the beast that
carries her which has the seven heads and ten horns.

Verse 8
The angel seems to identify the beast by its head that had the
mortal wound in Chapter 13:3. But the emphasis is in the fact that
it existed in the past, then it did not, but then it will again.
In other words the beast lived, was killed, and then resurrected,
duplicating the resurrection of Jesus Christ by coming back to
life, but at the end of the tribulation will be destroyed. The
beasts empire during the tribulation is described as ascending
out of the "bottomless pit," the pits of hell. His empire will
not last long for its destiny is perdition, or destruction.
Total ruin or eternal destruction. Those who dwell on the earth
will be amazed at this beast, because up to this time the
possibility of a world empire was remote.

Charlemagne, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini, the World Court, the
League of Nations, and the United Nations have all tried and
failed to bring all the nations together. But the antichrist with
his charm and personality will succeed along with the help of
Satan and the powers of hell. The success of the antichrist will
amaze those who are left behind on the earth after the rapture of
the church. Those dwelling on the earth are identified as those
"whose names were not written in the Book of Life from the
foundations of the world." These are the people who have rejected
Christ or who have never placed their faith in Him as Lord and
Savior. They are the unsaved who are attracted to the beast,
have taken the mark of the beast and worship him.

Verse 9
The angel gives his explanation with the words
"here is the mind which hath wisdom, which indicates that only
someone with the wisdom of God (found in the Word of God)
can understand this vision.

Verse 10
The 7 heads represent seven kings or governments. By 7 mountains
he means that false religion sits upon seven kingdoms or empires
that have complete and full rule and power. The seven mountains
and seven heads mens seven kings of kingdoms and empires.

Who are these kings or kingdoms or empires? Scripture does not
identify these kings. The best way to discover who they are is to
look back through the Old Testament and note the kings or empires
that opposed God's people. The first five of the kings or empires
are fallen. They no longer exist as an empire. These are Egypt,
Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Perisa, and Greece.

One of the kingdoms still remains. It still exists and continues
to exist down through the centuries. This would be Rome and the
traits of Rome that have continued to exist down through the
centuries, traits that exist in the ruling bodies and legislatures
of governments, in the representative governments and laws of
nations, and in the religion of papal Rome. Catholicism.

Wycliffe Bible Commentary made this comment
Many believe and they agree, that the day is coming when the
Roman Church itself will, in some mysterious way, enter into a
compromising relationship with atheistic communism. Now that is
Wycliffe Bible commentary making that statement. I looked in 4
different commentaries and they all made similar statements that
they felt that the roman church would raise its head and be a
part of the Babylonian religion.

One king or kingdom is not yet come. This is a reference to a
revival of the Roman empire or of many of the nations that were
in the old Roman empire. The antichrist would embrace the traits
of all the empires and rule over them all. He would be the eighth
ruler mentioned here in verse 11. They all go into "perdition" at
the end of the tribulation. The antichrist will be cast into the
lake of fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Revelation 17: 12-14
The ten horns represent ten kings, ten kingdoms or nations that
will have great political power for "one hour" a short period of
time. These nations "have received no kingdom as of yet, meaning
they were not yet in existence in John's day. So they cannot be
nations related to the old Roman Empire. They will come into
existence at the end of the church age and will have power in the
time of the end when the antichrist appears.

The ten horns coincide with the ten toes of Nebuchadnezzar's
vision of Daniel 7. These are the ten kings who will make up the
antichrist's world confederacy of nations. They will eventually
oppose the Lord Jesus and the Bible and be ready to follow the
antichrist.

The ten nations will have one mind, being united in purpose,
giving their power and authority to the antichrist. They will
promise compete allegiance and cooperation to the beast.

These ten nations will rise out of the Roman empire, and are not
in unity at first. Three are forced into giving up their power
and authority and turning it all over to the antichrist. But
the other seven willingly give their power to him.

Verse 14
In this verse we jump ahead to the final battle of the tribulation,
where the antichrist and his armies (including the ten kingdoms
represented by the ten horns) come to the valley Maggot or the
battle of Armageddon to "make war with the Lamb. But Christ will
over come their joint forces, He will win the war, for He is and
always will be "Lord of lords, and King of kings. He is the
rightful Ruler of this world, and in this battle He will bring
the victory that will begin the reign of the millennial kingdom.

In his final battle Jesus will not be alone. He will be
accompanied by those who are "called, and chosen, and faithful."
They are believers who have responded to the call to salvation and
have faithfully served the Lord. This shows that the believers who
are caught up to meet the Lord in the air at the time of the
resurrection and rapture of the church will be with Him when he
returns for his final victory over the forces of the antichrist.
The victory is His, but the believers will share in the results
of His triumph.

Revelation 17, Verse 15
The angel first explains to John the meaning of the water on which
the woman is sitting. It is the peoples of the earth.
Peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages.

They all have been affected down thru the centuries by these false
religious systems that will culminate in the state religion of the
antichrist. Those people still living at the end of the age
will become part of the antichrist's kingdom.

Verses 16 thru 18
At some point during the reign of the antichrist, the ten nations
who support him will come to hate the whore or prostitute which
may include false churches bearing the name "Christian" as well as
all the other religions and cults of the world. The ten nations
will decide that if the antichrist is to be given complete
allegiance and devotion, no room should be left for any other
religion. So they will completely destroy the harlot, including
her institutions. They will make desolate, without property or
buildings. They will make her naked. That is, they will strip her
of her beautiful appearance, her jewels, and fine clothes, her
signs of power, wealth and influence will be gone.

They will "eat her flesh" that is consume and destroy the
religious organizations with their priests and all their functions.

Then whatever is left they will destroy "with fire."
This could happen during he middle of the tribulation when the
antichrist declares himself to be god and demands that the whole
world worship him. What these ten horns, or nations, do will help
to prepare them for their own judgment, for they will be gathered
in unity in the worship of the beast and will follow him into the
final battle where all nations will gather.

Let's take a closer look at this end time religion. It will be a
religion of idolatry. This prostitute who sits on many waters is
the religious prostitute of Babylonian idolatry.

She will exercise tremendous power over the world government the
first half of the tribulation.

Tim LaHaye said after viewing the religion of the Hindus,
Buddhists, Confucianists, Taoists, Muslims, and primitive
religionists, I have found that none of them teaches the moral
standards of God. Instead, their practices are based on a loose
form of behavior that permits sensual activities, producing guilt
complexes that the religion in turn uses to enslave its people in
forms of personal sacrifice and self abuse to atone for their own
sins.

He also said that whenever the church as an organization has
involved herself in politics, she has forsaken the will of God.
That does not rule out individual Christians being good citizens
and participating in offices of government, but no where in
Scripture is the Church taught to usurp authority from the kings
of the earth.*

When you hear the words Ecumenical church unity, run as far away
from it as you can for it is the plan of the devil.

A statement attributed to Charles Spurgeon said this
"you cannot have unity without forsaking truth, and to forsake
truth for the sake of unity is to betray Jesus Christ."

Remember religious Babylon (the Prostitute) will be destroyed
during the middle of the tribulation. Babylon the governmental
system will be destroyed at the end of the tribulation.

Revelation 17
8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come
up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell
on the earth, whose name has not been written in the bBok of
LIFE from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they
see the beast, that he was and is not and will come.

9-10 Here is the mind which has wisdom. The 7 heads are 7
mountains on which the woman sits, and they are 7 kings;
5 have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when
he comes, he must remain a little while.

11 The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth
and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction.

12-13 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet
received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the
beast for one hour. These have one purpose, and they give their
power and authority to the beast.

14 These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will
overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings,
and those who are with Him are the called, chosen and faithful

15 And he said to me, "The waters which you saw where the harlot
sits, are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.

16 And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will
hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will
eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire.

17 For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by
having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the
beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled.

18 The woman whom you saw is the great city,
which reigns over the kings of the earth."
