EPHESUS: CHURCH #1 of REVELATION

STUDY the 3 Epistles of John

The REVELATION of JESUS CHRIST to St. John
Letter to the church in Ephesus
Revelation Chapter 2 verses 1 thru 7

Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and
blessed are those who hear it and take it to heart. He is coming
with the clouds, and every eye will see him Here are letters
written to the 7 churchs of the Ages sent with the Holy Angel
of each one

Church #1 EPHESUS
CAPSULE: I know you can't stand sin & you have tested those
who claim to be Christians but deceive. But you forgot ME.
Repent! Come back to ME!

To the angel messenger of the assembly in EPHESUS write
The One Who holds the 7 stars in His right hand,
the One who walks among the 7 golden lampstands
(candlesticks, which are the 7 churchs, the 7 church Ages) says this

lampstands

I know your deeds, activities, toil & troubles & your patient
endurance, & that you cannot tolerate evil men, & you put to the
test those who call themselves God's messengers but are not, and
you found them to be liars, imposters, and you have endured for
My name's sake, and have not given up. But I have this against
you, that you left left the love for Me you had at first.

Remember from where you have fallen and repent, change your
heart to line up with God's will and do what you did when you
first knew Me; or I am coming to you and will remove your
lampstand out of its place, unless you repent. Yet this you have
in your favor, that you hate those who corrupt others, which I
also detest. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit
says to the churchs. To him who overcomes I will grant to eat
of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.
Revelation 2:1-7

REPENT ~ STOP!
Turn around and go the other way.

If you are living together sexually, get married or get out.
This is SIN! ALL sexual activity outside of marriage is
SIN. - STOP!

If you are lying or deceiving, STOP! Tell the Truth.
Have integrity. Let what you say today also be true tomorrow.

If you are gossiping, STOP! Speak well of others or don't speak.
Exercise responsibility not rights.

You can argue with me, or justify yourself, or say you know God
is love & forgives, but GOD HATES SIN! You can NOT quarrel
with GOD. We are NOT the Light to the world if we are living as
they live. We are NOT salt if our life style does not convict.

Can you say ...
practice what you preach?
Our life is the ONLY BIBLE some will read.

God's judgment comes FIRST to the church.
The Father grieves over a church which is blind, naked,
no covering of religiosity can hide selfish motives from the
Father. To reject powerful words from a powerful God is to
remain lukewarm, without passion, far from the One we
claim to follow.

He sent the prophets to rebuke, to point out sin, to a deaf
church who desires only sweet praises & total acceptance of
everything they do, to please their itching ears. What they
desire is whitewash to cover the flimsy wall that they are.
When the enemy moves with power, as he is beginning to do,
it is going to be with a religious covering & disguise, & so
will all who are religious be deceived, because they rejected
& judged the messengers who brought the truth
and would not be rebuked.

REVELATION CHAPTER 2

The letters to the seven churches begins with Ephesus.
This church was started by Paul. The church at Ephesus fits in a
remarkable way the conditions of the church as a whole at the end
of the first century, where all of these conditions already
existed. The question is Why is the letter addressed to only
7 churches in Asia? There was another 5 churches which was not
addressed. Troas, Miletus, Colosse, and Hierapolis. There had to
be a reason why it was to only 7 churchs.

He gave the Revelation so that all believers could know the things
that are to take place in the end time. What we find here is that
the seven churches are representative of other churches.

The characteristics that are found in these churches have the
same characteristics that are found in other churches. Jesus was
addressing all the churches of the earth. Each church no matter
its condition, can discover what kind of church it is by honestly
taking inventory of its major traits and checking those traits
against these 7 churches.

These messages to the seven churches were given for personal
application. All churches and all believers are to apply the
messages to our own situation.

The Lord expects us to search our hearts and to heed the messages
given to these churches. So the first message was to the church
of Ephesus, a church that was faithful to Christ and to
the Word of God, but it was a church without love.

Archbishop Trench of the Church England made this statement
There is not another portion or Scripture, of equal extent or
understanding, to which so little attention has been paid.

Strange to say, the Church has nowhere included these epistles in
the lessons prescribed to be read in the public services, except
in a secondary and very remote manner. He goes on to say that
chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation can under no circumstance ever be
heard read in the congregation. He says it is as if there had
been some general concert to prevent them from being seen or heard

Each one of the these letters begins with a revelation of Jesus
and commendation, usually followed by a warning and a challenge.
He knows exactly what is going on in each church. He knows their
successes, their failures, their victories, their problems, and
their difficulties. He knows exactly what each one needs.

We need to find out a little about the town of Ephesus before we
can know about the church there.

Ephesus was a great commercial city. The great temple of Diana was
there. Diana was the goddess who had a grotesque head and many
breasts and focused upon the sensual pleasure of the flesh. As
the years went by the people there depended more and more on the
trade that came from their religion and superstition. So this is
what the church had to deal with.

The church at Ephesus had a small beginning. Paul found only
12 believers in the city. They had been won to the Lord by an
immature but impressive preacher Apollos. They had been
misinformed on the presence of the Holy Spirit, laced a
consciousness of the Spirit in the life of the believer.

Paul began to teach in the synagogue and taught for 3 months. But
the jews were hardened and refused to believe. They murmured
against the message. So Paul moved the church and preached Christ
for 2 whole years. The Lord began to work special miracles, and
the church began to witness amazing things. As Paul preached and
God worked miracles, many believed and the church grew mightily.
But like all churches time changes a lot of things. Now Jesus
gives John this vision these churches get their acts together.

Verse 1
Jesus identifies himself as the one who holds the "seven stars"
in his right hand. So this letter is addressed to the minister of
the church as well as to the church. This means that the Lord
holds the minister responsible for the church and its welfare.
Christ expects the minister to study and heed the message himself
and to lead the believers to heed the message. I thought it
interesting that this one commentary made this comment. He said
"Jesus Christ is the one who holds the minister in his hands."
And that this means that the minister is:

1. Chosen and picked out of the world by Christ.
2. Is placed where he is by the hand of Christ.
3. Is expected to be an instrument in the hand of Christ.
4. Is responsible to the hand of Christ.
5. Is to be held accountable by the hand of Christ.

Notice also that Christ is in the midst of all the churches.
He has no favorites. If a body of believers truly follows Christ,
He is in their midst. One commentary made this statement: they
are subject to rigid inspection. But his purpose is to encourage,
preserve, and challenge them.

EPHESUS is Commended for 5 things
Verses 2 & 3

1. The church worked and labored for Christ. He said I know your
works and labor, he was not only honoring but also remembering
such service. So they were a church committed to serving Christ
to the fullest.

2. He commends them for their patience. They had been stead fast
in serving Christ and in standing against the temptation and
trials of life. They were steadfast in studying, proclaiming the
gospel and in ministering to the needs of the needy.

3. He commends the them for not putting up with the evil around
them. They were surrounded by a culture of evil practices and evil
people. Sounds like our society today does it not. It was not easy
for them and it is not easy for us today to be a faithful witness

for Christ when we see persecution and opposition. They showed by
their lives and their words that they could not put up with the
sin and shame, and all the evil.

4. They tested all the preachers and teachers of the church and
rejected the false. If a teacher confessed Jesus Christ, as the
Son of God, he was accepted and allowed to teach. If he denied
Jesus Christ he was not allowed to teach. They did not tolerate
false teachers and stood against all false teaching. They were
loyal to Christ. They did just what the scriptures exhorts: the
tested the spirits of the teachers.

John in his lifetime saw many false teachers and false prophets,
some of them right in the church.

5. They held up under all for the sake of Christ's name.

They did all the right things, which is a meaningful picture of a
true church, a church that had surrendered everything to Jesus
Christ. But there is one thing lacking.

Verses 4 - 6
Despite their zeal and hard work for the Lord, they had very
serious flaw. They had left their first love.

QUESTION: What do you think their first love was?
Their deep love and their devotion to Christ and His Word.
Christ was no longer first in their lives. They were giving the
Lord service, but not themselves. They were putting themselves
and their own affairs first. They no longer had intimate
fellowship with the Lord. They were putting programs, services,
ministries, and fellowship first. They had become more attached
to the church than they were to Christ. They no longer showed
Christ like compassion. This warning teaches us that knowing
correct doctrine, obeying some of the commandments, and
worshiping in the church are not enough. And that is something
a lot of A/G churches have gotten away from.

Again this goes back to often people from other denominations
come in and bring their own beliefs with them rather than taking
on the denominational beliefs of the church they have come into
and expect that church to change to their beliefs. I know this
not a very popular stand but I have been in a lot of different
churches and I have seen this happen.

Verse 5

He says remember where you came from and realize the state you
were in before your response to Christ. Also remember how your
love flowed out in the first years of the church's existence so
that other churches were founded in nearby towns. There are
three steps involved in returning.

1. He says remember where you have fallen. Think about your former
love for the Lord. Remember his presence, the prayer and sharing,
the feelings of warmth and tenderness, the fellowship and
communion with Him, the joy and the rejoicing of his presence that
filled your heart and the love that existed between you land Him.

2. Repent: turn away from what ever has pulled you away from
Christ and turn back to Christ. You have become more attached to
something that keeps your mind from focusing on Christ and
fellowshipping and communing with him like you did.

3. Do the first works that you did.

QUESTION: What does 'do the first works' mean?

Return your mind to Christ, take time to pray. Do this all day
long every so often. Set times to get alone with Christ and
study His Word and pray. Start walking again as if Christ was
walking by your side.

Then comes a warning in that verse also. He says
"I will remove your candlestick (church) from its place.

The church would be removed from the presence of Jesus, Jesus
would no longer be walking in their midst. Christ will reject
any congregation or church and remove it from his kingdom if it
does not repent of its declining love fore and obedience to the
Lord Jesus Christ. Doctrinal purity is not enough. This warning
is going to be shattering to some when Christ returns. Why?
They are doctrinally sound but they have lost their first
love for Christ.

Verse 6
The Ephesian church had stood against the Nicolaitans.
Just who this group was is not sure. But they stressed 2 things.

1. Christ had done away with the law of the O.T. and had
instituted the law of Christian liberty. They taught that
Christians were free to indulge in the lust of the flesh.

2. The soul and spirit of man was far more important than the
flesh. If there was no law to govern us, then we can do what we
like just so we profess to believe in Christ.

Think how many people feel that they can live like they want just
so they attend and support the church. If they attend church then,
they feel they can live like the want during the week. Many
people believe they are eternally secure because they believe in
Christ, have been baptized, and belong to a church. Yet, they
live like they want during the week. They continue to seek the
pleasures and possessions of the world, banking and hoarding and
neglecting the spread of the gospel. There is no evidence
whatsoever of repentance and of a changed and holy life,
no evidence of self-denial.

The point being made here the Ephesian church had preached
and taught against the error of Nicolaitans. They refused to let
error to enter the church, but they had lost their first love
their love for Christ.

A PROMISE
In Revelation 3:10-11 Jesus says
Because you have kept My command to persevere,
I also WILL keep you from the hour of trial
which shall come upon the whole world,
to test those who dwell on the Earth.
Behold, I am coming quickly! (SUDDENLY! Unexpectedly!)
Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.
